Threw some clay today. I think I am finally getting down how to center the clay on the wheel. I was having problems with the bottom being out of round and I started to use my bottom fingers more in the squeezing process which seemed to help getting the clay centered. Monday I tried to throw 3 bowls and all of them blew apart, but was able to get 2 done today. I think the three that blew apart was because they were too thin on the bottom and was not able to hold up the weight of the sides.
ReplyDeleteTried to make some drinking glasses today. The first one did not go so good and ended up being a cup. The second one went a bit better, but it had too large of a diameter. I tried a bit of new finger bracing when throwing with the second glass. Inaddition to having my hands touching, I also had my pointing fingers touching when working the walls of the glass. This seemed to help to make a more consistant wall as I pull the glass up. For the third glass, I tried something a bit different with my glob of clay. For the first two glasses, my beginning glob was about the size of a slinky. For the third glass, my beginning glob looked more like a Teepee. I kept the base of the glob narrow and at about the size of the glass diameter that I wanted. This seemed to help and the third glass was much closer to was I was actually trying to achieve.
